Labour Unions X District Council
The pandemic of Wuhan Pneumonia has been going on for months while various industries greatly suffered from it. So did the employees. As public facilities have been fully closed for months, sports lessons by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) were all canceled. Sports coaches who have signed contracts with LCSD face difficulties maintaining their livelihoods.
Fortunately, the Hong Kong Sports Coach Union (HKSCU) stood up for its members. The union first wrote to the Wan Chai District Council to express their concerns. The representatives of the HKSCU were then invited by the Cultural and Leisure Services Committee within our council to attend the meeting and explain their demands to the councilors in person.
Many councilors and I supported HKSCU and stated clearly: as the LCSD sports lessons were mainly funded by the Wan Chai District Council, we the councilors urged the LCSD to make the best use of their resources and to provide aid to the affected coaches.
In mid-April, we heard from the LCSD that all sports coaches who had signed contracts with LCSD but had their lessons canceled during the period from 29 Jan to 31 Mar would be paid half of their promised salaries.
Upon this issue, we are grateful for the LCSD’s swift reaction to our request. Meanwhile, as the pandemic goes on, we are requesting the LCSD to follow up with the sports coaches’ later salary arrangement.

Recommendations to our Oi-Kwanians
Oi-Kwanians, do you know Mil Mill?
Mil Mill is the first pulp mill and education center that recycles beverage cartons in Hong Kong. Mil Mill is able to process 10 tons of beverage cartons daily and convert them into paper pulp.
To support the local recycling industry, we have installed a recycling bin for beverage cartons outside our office. We will be thrilled if you may kindly cut the beverage cartons open, wash them, flatten them, and put them in the recycling bin.
District Council’s funding is for grabs, Owners’ Corporations!
Both Owners’ Corporations (OC) and Mutual Aid Committee (MAC) within the Wan Chai District are eligible to apply for findings from Wan Chai District Council to hold community activities. Each OC or MAC may apply for maximum HKD5000 each time and maximum twice a year.
If your OC or MAC needs a venue to have meetings, please feel free to contact us!
Fun Fact: OC and MAC have the right to determine if District Councilor may put up posters in the lobby of your building. If you haven’t seen our posters around, please kindly let your OC or MAC know your request!
